I don’t know about you, but I’ve been seeing TikTok Shop ads pop up all over my For You page lately. The convenience of buying straight from the app is super tempting, but it also makes me hesitate. Should I really trust these sellers that seem to appear overnight?

As online shopping continues to grow, TikTok has thrown its hat into the e-commerce ring. The idea of TikTok Shop is that influencers and sellers can set up storefronts directly within the TikTok app. This means users can discover and buy products seamlessly, without ever having to leave TikTok.

On the one hand, it’s brilliant – capitalising on TikTok’s huge young user base and their willingness to shop on social media. But even though the concept is exciting, as a consumer I have some concerns. Specifically, how much do we really know about these TikTok sellers?

In this post, I’ll break down the pros and cons of buying on TikTok Shop, so you can decide for yourself if it seems legit or sketchy. Let’s dive in!

What exactly is the TikTok Shop?

First, a quick crash course for anyone unfamiliar with how TikTok Shop works. Within the TikTok app, certain videos are now tagged as “shoppable.” You can click on products featured in the video to view pricing, descriptions, photos and user reviews. 

If you want to buy, you simply add to cart and check out, without ever leaving TikTok. Both individuals and brands can sign up to become TikTok sellers. All they need to do is create a TikTok business account and apply for a shop. 

TikTok doesn’t seem to have any formal vetting process – if you meet their requirements like having at least 100k followers, you’re approved to start selling. Right now TikTok Shop is only available in certain Asian markets. 

But TikTok has accelerated plans to expand it globally based on crazy revenue numbers coming out of Southeast Asia. As far as what you can buy, it runs the gamut from makeup and skincare to home goods, clothing and accessories. 

The key ingredient is products with viral potential, since TikTok is all about those addictive videos.

The convincing pros of buying straight from your FYP

I’ll admit, as a longtime TikTok addict, the idea of shopping on the platform is pretty next level. Being able to impulse buy that snazzy phone case you just saw in a TikTok does sound dangerously convenient.

Here are some of the top advantages to TikTok Shop that make me tempted to click “Add to Cart.”

Convenience is king

The biggest draw of TikTok Shop is undoubtedly the convenience factor. You come across something you like in a TikTok, a couple taps later it’s on its way to your door. Compared to sifting through endless Instagram stories or getting distracted down rabbit holes on Amazon, TikTok Shop feels like frictionless shopping. 

For people like me with short attention spans, it’s kind of genius. And with TikTok’s algorithm that knows your interests, you don’t even have to hunt for products – entertaining shopping inspo comes straight to your For You Page. 

It’s an extremely sticky experience TikTok has designed intentionally to hook shoppers.

Riding the hype of influencer marketing

Influencer marketing on TikTok is huge, and sellers are leveraging that social proof. The top livestreamers on TikTok Shop are racking up insane sales, sometimes over $100 million in just minutes!

Seeing your favourite TikTok influencer shill rave over a product, even if they’re paid, sways people to buy. We’re much more likely to trust someone we “know” compared to a random brand.

FOMO also kicks in when you see positive reviews and sales stats from fellow TikTokers. No one wants to miss out on the hot new trending item.

Competitive pricing and discounts

To lure people in, some TikTok sellers offer big discounts or prices lower than competitors.

Exclusive coupons and flash sales happening in real time also create buying urgency. Who doesn’t love a good deal?

For inexpensive impulse purchase items, the prices on TikTok Shop seem decent. Though I’d worry about quality for more expensive products discounted significantly.

Reasons I’m hesitant to click checkout

However, there are also some red flags with TikTok Shop that give me pause. As much as I love my FYP, handing over my money and personal info to random sellers doesn’t seem prudent.

The verification process raises eyebrows

My biggest hesitation with TikTok Shop comes down to trust. TikTok claims they verify seller credentials, but their screening process seems questionable. All you need to start selling is an influencer account with a large following. 

But followers can easily be faked or bought. There’s no guarantee products will be authentic and not scams. And brands can create TikTok accounts overnight. There’s no way to check business legitimacy or history – no seller ratings or reviews.

Essentially, any random person or shady company can create a TikTok Shop without proving trustworthiness. Much riskier than buying from an established ecommerce site.

Knock-off products run rampant

Studies have found counterfeit products are flooding TikTok Shop, especially from Asia.

Listings often use stolen images and make false claims about brands or product origins. Many items are cheap knock-offs being passed off as high-end.

While dupes and lookalikes have a place, I find it unethical when sellers intentionally misrepresent items to mislead buyers. Without enforceable copyright laws, TikTok Shop has become a haven for inauthentic goods. The lack of accountability is concerning.

Shipping and customs are unpredictable

TikTok Shop direct ships products to you from the seller’s location, which could be anywhere in the world. International shipping can mean long delivery times of a month or more. Plus potential headaches dealing with customs fees, returns and lost parcels.

Some TikTok Shop policies around logistics feel vague and unreliable. I’d worry about getting my order or having recourse as a buyer.

Tips to shop smart if you try TikTok Shop

Despite some definite risks, I understand the appeal of TikTok Shop may be irresistible for some users.

If you do want to give TikTok Shop a try, here are a few tips to stay cautious:

• Vet sellers thoroughly before purchasing – do reverse image searches, check other social accounts, look for contact info. Go beyond just TikTok.
• Stick with reputable influencers recommending products, not random accounts. But still take endorsements with a grain of salt.
• For expensive or fragile items, go through ecommerce sites first for buyer protection. Only buy directly on TikTok Shop for cheap impulse buys.
• Use a credit card when possible – you can dispute charges more easily if scammed.
• Inspect items closely when they arrive – confirm it matches the product description and images.
• Film an unboxing video right away in case you need to dispute with the seller later.
• Buy inexpensive test orders first before making any big purchases.

I hope TikTok takes steps to improve platform policies and crack down on fakes as it expands globally. With some maturity, TikTok Shop has major money-making, addictive potential. But I’d be an ultra-cautious shopper for now. Flawed instant gratification can come with nasty surprises.
